Running Wild by Michael Morpurgo is a great adventure book. It’s about a 10-year- old boy and his mum who fly from England all the way to Indonesia, and it’s not just a holiday.
The main characters are a young boy called Will, his mother and Oona. Will and his mother have more or less escaped to Indonesia after the death of Will’s father, who was a soldier in Iraq.
At the beginning of the book Will is on an elephant and they are walking by the sea and within a few pages it talks about Will and his mother going to Will’s grandparents and staying with them because of the big tragedy. After a while it tells you how one day Will and his mum were watching Shrek 2 when there was a knock on the door. Two men had come to say that Will’s father had died in a roadside bombing. At the end of the book there is a postscript by Will’s grandfather.
The story is written in two parts: one from the future, one from the past. The book does create a lot of suspense because the author is really good at leaving your mouth open by using lots of detail and description. The author also goes from one point to the other in one page.
Some other great books by Michael Morpurgo are: Dear Olly, Adolphus Tips, and The Butterfly Lion. I would rate this book four out of five stars.
I liked this book because makes you want to read on and it is different from other novels. I would recommend this book to adventure lovers as it is very adventurous.
