When We Were Orphans
When We Were Orphans is a novel by Kazou Ishiguro, author of Remains of the Day and winner of many prestigious literary prizes. It is a novel set alternately in London and Shanghai in the period between the First and Second World Wars. This is essentially a crime novel, told from the perspective of Christopher Banks, a successful detective.

Empire of the Sun
Empire of the Sun is a novel, which portrays the Japanese occupation of mainland China during the Second World War. It was first published in 1984, and was written by the author J.G Ballard.
