ES CULHAM GOES FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH

Our 2011 students produced another outstanding set of Baccalaureate results for the school, with over 50% of students achieving over 80%, nearly 30% over 85% and three students exceeding 90%.

To gain these sorts of marks students have to perform to a consistently high standard over a wide range of subjects and assessment styles.  It therefore reflects not only their intellectual ability, but also their application and determination to succeed.  As a result I have no doubt that the European Baccalaureate is an excellent preparation for study at university as it exceptionally rigorous and demanding.  Despite our system’s small size, the European Baccalaureate is accepted and appreciated by universities across Europe, although we are of course continually seeking to raise the profile of both the school and the examination.

Although Universities in the United Kingdom were the most popular destinations for the class of 2011, students will also be going on to study in Germany, Belgium, France, The Netherlands, the USA and New Zealand; and on an Art Foundation course.  The destinations of Culham students last summer confirm the high regards which Universities have for the European Baccalaureate.  In terms of UK Universities, despite it being a particularly competitive year with the imminent arrival of a new fee structure, a large percentage gained places at their first choice University.  The range of courses and universities involved is very impressive, and five of our students will be starting their studies in Oxford or Cambridge this autumn.  More students than ever before will be studying in France and we have developed a particularly strong link with Sciences-Po.  Three of our students, one from each section, have been accepted on programmes at Sciences-Po, linked to different parts of the world. An increasing number of our students apply to study in more than one country, and I would encourage this practice as they can maximise their possibilities, and fully utilise the potential of the European Baccalaureate. Our students are also exceptionally well placed to undertake courses with periods of study in more than one country, or courses which involve dual certification.

Finally I would suggest that it is perhaps only with hindsight that our students fully appreciate the benefits of studying for the European Baccalaureate at Culham.  Ex-students often come in to see us, and they always talk with great warmth about the school and its friendly and supportive atmosphere.  They also clearly value the breadth of knowledge and understanding that the European Baccalaureate has given them and the fact that they can make links between seemingly disparate subjects.  Many of them are of course also making good use of their language skills and have gone on to study or work in different countries.

Further information and a more detailed breakdown of our students’ destinations are available from John Little (Overall Careers Coordinator)
