The book Vernon God Little by DBC Pierre is a fictional autobiography.
The main character in the book is called Vernon God Little (hence the title). He is basically an average 15-year-old boy. He has his own thoughts but keeps them to himself and he swears…a lot. He lives in a small town in Texas with his mother.
The book is about a period in Vernon’s life when he is best friends with a boy called Jesus Navarro; that is, until Jesus goes mad and shoots 16 students and eventually takes his own life. From then on he is interrogated by police and harassed by the press.
The book is written just as you would expect the narrator to speak, with slang, lots of description and swearing. “God knows I tried my best to learn the ways of the world, even had inklings we could be glorious; but after all that’s happened, the inkles ain’t so easy anymore. I mean – what kind of f***en life is this?” This is an example of the language used in the text.
Ludmila’s Broken English, Suddenly Doctor Cox, Lights Out in Wonderland are some other published books by DBC Pierre. The book Vernon God Little is a book without sequels.
I think this book is good, not without problems (the story line is a bit strange) but it was enjoyable to read and gave a vivid picture of the story.
